Reality Checkers addresses the online radicalization and indoctrination of young men into alt-right spaces, a process accelerated by the growth of social media platforms and the influence of extremist figures such as Andrew Tate. Research for this project revealed that vulnerable young people are often specifically targeted and drawn in through the promise of belonging and community.
In response, my classmate and I developed an educational board game informed by research into online extremism and consultation with a psychologist. Designed for players aged 10–16, the game aims to help young people recognize and question manipulative online content.
Players collect “social media chips” by answering prompt cards that introduce them to deceptive digital tactics, including AI-generated imagery, misinformation, and misleading posts. We tested the game with young people and gathered feedback from an education professional, which allowed us to refine the design and improve its educational effectiveness.
